Moving to The Netherlands? How exciting! 🇳🇱

A new country, a new home, new opportunities… but also quite a few things to organise before you can really settle in. And let’s be honest, moving abroad can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. Where do you start? What needs to be arranged before you arrive? And what can wait until you’re here?

To help you get started, we’ve put together 6 practical tips to make your move to the Netherlands a little easier.

1. Finding a place to call home

Finding the right home is often one of the biggest challenges, especially in popular cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague.
The Dutch rental market moves quickly, so it’s good to be prepared. Know your budget, think about your preferred neighbourhoods and have your documents ready.
And one little detail worth knowing: unfurnished in the Netherlands can sometimes mean no flooring, curtains or even light fixtures!

2. Your BSN: A small number that opens many doors

Your BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is your Dutch citizen service number, and you’ll need it for many everyday things, from employment to taxes and healthcare.
If you’re staying for more than four months, you’ll generally need to register with your local municipality (gemeente) within five days of arriving.

Our tip: Try to book your registration appointment before your move. It can save you valuable time during those busy first days.

3. Don’t Forget the Utilities!

Imagine finally getting the keys to your new home, only to realise you haven’t arranged your internet connection!
Depending on your rental agreement, you’ll need to organise electricity, gas, water and internet.
Some of these arrangements can be made before you arrive, so it’s worth checking as soon as your rental contract is signed.

4. Bringing your furniture or starting fresh?

Moving your belongings internationally takes a little planning.
Will you bring everything with you or choose a furnished home? And will your furniture actually fit through those famously narrow Dutch staircases?
Checking what’s included in your new home and planning delivery dates in advance can save a few surprises on moving day.

5. Getting to know the dutch healthcare system

Healthcare works a little differently in every country, and the Netherlands is no exception.
Most people who move here to live or work need Dutch basic health insurance, although there are exceptions depending on your circumstances.
It’s also helpful to find a local GP (huisarts), who will usually be your first point of contact when you need medical advice.

6. And most importantly… feeling at home
Moving isn’t just about paperwork, furniture and appointments.
It’s also about finding your favourite coffee spot, discovering your neighbourhood, meeting new people and, if you’re relocating with family, helping everyone find their place.
Because feeling at home takes a little more than just having the keys!

There’s a lot to think about when moving to the Netherlands, but you don’t have to figure everything out at once.
A little preparation, some local knowledge and the right support can make all the difference.
